PHC GROWTH + RETENTION SERIES PART 4

PHC GROWTH + RETENTION SERIES PART 4

KEEP WHAT YOU GROW: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER - WITH JUST ONE PRODUCT

Over the last several weeks, we've talked about wash day, scalp care, moisture, styling, application, curl definition, nighttime maintenance, and retention.

Today, we're bringing everything together.

Because at the end of the day, hair growth is only half the battle.

The real goal is keeping the hair you grow.

That is what retention is all about.

When your scalp is healthy, your hair is moisturized, your curls are protected, and your routine is consistent, growth becomes much easier to see because you're no longer losing progress to breakage.

Let's walk through the complete process from start to finish.

START WITH CLEAN, ELONGATED HAIR

Everything starts on wash day.

Begin by detangling your hair before washing. This is especially important for thicker hair because water can cause tangles to tighten and become more difficult to manage.

Wash in sections if necessary.

Once your hair is clean and conditioned, twist or braid the hair to keep it stretched while it dries.

This helps reduce shrinkage, minimize tangling, and prepares the hair for styling.

The more organized the hair is before styling, the easier it becomes to maintain.

THE APPLICATION METHOD THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

One of the biggest takeaways from this series has been our updated application method.

Instead of taking all the twists down and then applying product, we now apply the formula while the twists or braids are still in place.

This allows us to:

• get product directly to the roots
• smooth the hair from root to tip
• reduce frizz before styling begins
• improve curl consistency
• create more elongation
• reduce manipulation

As you apply the formula, focus on stretching and smoothing each section.

This is also the perfect time to smooth the roots and edges.

By the time you finish the entire head, the first sections have already had time to absorb moisture and conditioning benefits.

Then, instead of taking down dry hair and trying to create curls afterward, you're releasing organized, moisturized curls from the beginning.

NEVER STOP HALFWAY DOWN THE CURL

One of the most common mistakes we see is people applying product only to part of the curl.

When you're smoothing product through your hair, always continue all the way to the ends.

In fact, go slightly past the ends.

The ends are the oldest and most fragile part of the hair.

If the ends are dry, frayed, or unprotected, they are much more likely to break.

When you smooth the entire curl from root to tip, you create:

• better definition
• better moisture retention
• less frizz
• stronger curls
• healthier ends

Every curl should feel smooth from the scalp all the way to the tip.

MORE PRODUCT VS LESS PRODUCT

The amount of product you use can influence the final look.

If you want:

More definition and shine

Use a little more product and smooth each curl thoroughly.

If you want:

A softer, freer look

Use less product and allow the curls to move more naturally.

Neither approach is wrong.

It's simply a matter of the look you're trying to achieve.

NIGHTTIME MAINTENANCE STILL MATTERS

The best wash day routine in the world cannot overcome poor nighttime habits.

Protect your hair at night.

Depending on your style, you may choose:

• loose twists
• stretching methods
• pineappling
• protective styles

The goal is to preserve moisture, definition, and elongation while reducing unnecessary friction.

Remember: retention happens between wash days too.

DUSTING VS TRIMMING

Many people who are trying to grow their hair end up trimming away progress.

Once you've removed major damage and your hair is healthy, frequent large trims usually aren't necessary.

Instead, focus on dusting.

Dusting simply means removing small damaged ends as needed.

This allows you to maintain healthy ends while continuing to retain length.

If your curls are healthy, moisturized, and protected, you'll often find that you need far less trimming than you once thought.

✔ Healthy scalp care

✔ Proper cleansing

✔ Moisture and hydration

✔ Stretching techniques

✔ Product application

✔ Curl definition

✔ Nighttime maintenance

✔ Length retention

✔ Frizz management

When these pieces work together, retention becomes much easier.

The goal isn't perfection.
